Gates Carbon Drive at idworx: Why We Now Also Offer Belt Drive Bikes
Anyone familiar with our previous statements about the Gates Carbon Drive belt drive may wonder why idworx now also offers bicycles equipped with a belt drive.
The answer is simple: Customer demand has changed.
More and more cyclists are looking for a high-quality bicycle with a belt drive while still expecting the outstanding quality, durability and functionality that define every idworx bicycle. That is why we now offer our customers the choice between a chain drive and the Gates Carbon Drive.
Over the past few years, many of our dealers have converted idworx bicycles to belt drive systems. After introducing the Gates Carbon Drive option for our trekking bikes, we are now extending this option to our mountain bike range.
Our goal is to make purchasing an idworx bicycle with the preferred drivetrain easier while also saving our dealers the effort of performing aftermarket conversions.
Has our opinion of belt drives changed?
No.
The introduction of the Gates Carbon Drive does not represent a change in our technical assessment of the system.
Our previous articles on belt drives (see here, here and here) still reflect our views today. The advantages and disadvantages discussed there remain valid from our perspective.
We offer the Gates Carbon Drive because many customers specifically ask for it—not because we consider it fundamentally superior to a chain drive.
Gates Carbon Drive at idworx
All idworx frames have always met the high standards of frame stiffness and manufacturing precision required for the Gates Carbon Drive system.
We exclusively use the Gates Carbon Drive CDX, as this product line offers significant improvements over the older CDC version.
Nevertheless, based on our experience, the Gates Carbon Drive remains a more sensitive drivetrain than our proven chain drive system.
Should you later decide that a belt drive no longer suits your needs, every idworx bicycle can easily be converted back to a conventional chain drive.
Gates Carbon Drive Belt Wear
After many years of use, we have observed a characteristic wear pattern on numerous Gates belts, regardless of the bicycle model.
Both the CDX and CDC belts eventually reach a point where the belt teeth begin separating from the belt's backing material. Once this occurs, continuing your ride is usually no longer possible.
Shortly before failure, small cracks typically appear at the base of the belt teeth, running parallel to the belt. These cracks are the most important warning sign.
The challenge is that the service life of a belt cannot be predicted reliably.
Depending on the rider, terrain, weather conditions, maintenance and riding style, this wear may occur after fewer than 10,000 kilometres, while other riders may exceed **20,000 kilometres—or considerably more—before similar signs appear.
Unlike bicycle chains, there is currently no reliable measuring tool that can accurately determine the remaining service life of a Gates belt.
Maintaining the Gates Carbon Drive
Regular cleaning not only extends belt life but also helps reduce unwanted noise.
We therefore recommend:
A clean belt drive also tends to run more quietly. After all, a belt drive can develop squeaking or rattling noises if it becomes dirty or is operated under unfavourable conditions.
Experience After Several Years with the Gates Carbon Drive
After several years of practical experience, a number of characteristic features of the Gates Carbon Drive have become apparent.
Occasionally, squeaking or rattling noises may occur. In most cases, these develop after the break-in period or during damp, wet or cold weather conditions.
The following procedure has proven effective:
Service Life: Belt Drive or Chain Drive?
One of the most frequently cited advantages of a belt drive is its low maintenance requirements.
It is true that a Gates belt does not require lubrication and is immune to corrosion. However, it is by no means maintenance-free.
A belt drive also requires regular cleaning, inspection and, if necessary, readjustment.
Our experience also shows that service life depends heavily on the conditions in which the bicycle is used. Therefore, no general statement can be made.
In particular, under the following conditions:
the Gates Carbon Drive may exhibit noticeably higher wear than our long-life idworx chain drivetrain.
Based on our current experience, the belt drive does not generally achieve a longer service life than the premium components used in our enclosed idworx chain drivetrain.
Correct Adjustment Is Essential
For reliable operation and maximum service life of the Gates Carbon Drive, two factors are particularly important:
Even minor deviations can result in noise, accelerated wear or drivetrain problems.
If in doubt, ask your idworx dealer to demonstrate the correct adjustment or have the system checked regularly.
Conclusion
By introducing the Gates Carbon Drive, idworx is responding to the wishes of many customers. At the same time, our technical assessment remains unchanged: both belt drives and chain drives have their own specific strengths and weaknesses.
Cyclists looking for a clean, corrosion-free drivetrain and who are willing to accept the particular characteristics of the system will find the Gates Carbon Drive CDX to be an attractive option.
Those who prioritize maximum robustness, easy wear monitoring and outstanding durability under demanding conditions are still best served by the proven idworx chain drivetrain.
